AT THE SUPERMARKET, we picked up eggs, some vegetables, and chicken to make omelettes. On the way home, I couldnât help but be curious.
âLachlan has been so excited since he knew you were coming. How do you two know each other?â
âOh, weâve been friends for forever.â Johan shrugged. âYeah, I suspect weâve known each other most of our lives.â
I found it interesting that both Lachlan and Johan were evasive about their relationship. I could understand Johanâs perspective; heâd only just met me and he probably didnât want to out himself, or Lachlan for that matter. It was Lachlan I didnât understand. Ever since I came out to him in university, weâd been open with each other regarding our sexual orientation. We both happened to be gay without being attracted to each other.
No mistake, Lachlan was extremely handsomeâso is Johanâand in the beginning I did have a silly crush on him. But living with him made me realise how much of a slob he was, and weâd stayed friends ever since. I wondered how Johan was able to put up with him.
Lachlan came home shortly after, while I was making the omelettes for Johan and me.
âThat smells good. Must be Guy cooking.â
As soon as Lachlan came to the doorway, Johan and he took one look at each other and ended up in a tight embrace. I turned and focused on the frying pan. Itâs silly to get envious. However, I still couldnât bear to see the two handsome men hug. A moment later, I felt a presence by my side.
âHey, Guy, you reckon you can make another one of whatever youâre making?â
I smiled and nodded, but still kept my eyes away from them. That was such a Lachlan thing to do, asking me to cook him something. Despite his being a slob, I liked him dearly. He was a great roommate, as long as he kept his mess in hisânow both Johanâs and hisâroom.
I let out a sigh as Lachlan moved away; I kind of felt guilty for perving on Lachlanâs boyfriend. I pushed the thoughts aside when I heard Johan speaking and finally turned to them.
âIâm going to have to clean your room tomorrow. Youâre just as big a pig as I remember.â
âI think you need to find yourself a new job as first priority, but you cleaning doesnât sound like a bad idea either.â
The lack of humor in the exchange struck me as odd. If I hadnât known better, I would have mistaken the heat in the loversâ bickering for a real argument.
I was grateful that Johan and Lachlan kept their distance during supper. At times, though, I couldnât help but notice the little glances and in-jokes they shared. I wonder how Iâm going to cope with living with them. At least my room isnât right next to theirs.
